The American Federation of Arts seeks a Senior Curator to oversee a vibrant and expanding exhibitions program, supervise a creative and professional curatorial team, and manage an individual roster of projects.
This key position will report to the Director and will work closely with the Manger of Exhibitions Administration and the curatorial staff to shape AFA’s exhibitions program ensuring the highest level of quality and scholarship, drawing on his/her own expertise and experience, and vetting ideas that are generated from the field and other sources. AFA’s exhibitions encompass all genres, periods, and media. There are currently approximately 20 exhibitions in various stages of development, with additional ideas and new collaborations underway. Although the majority of projects involve external guest curators, there are opportunities to curate and tour one’s own exhibitions.
The primary role of curatorial staff at the AFA is to project-manage exhibitions.
Responsibilities:
Overseeing all aspects of the organization of exhibitions; working closely with guest curators to shape exhibitions and realize all loans; procuring venues for exhibitions; liaising with organizing and participating institutions, as well as with key departments within the AFA.
The Senior Curator will be required to initiate and manage exhibitions, as well as supervise curatorial staff and their respective projects.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree or above in an arts-related field; exceptional communications skills, including the ability to be an effective public speaker; at least five years of work experience at an art museum managing all aspects of traveling exhibitions, including budgets and other logistics; demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a successful team; experience with staff supervision and hiring; exceptional organizational skills, including ability to oversee complex projects and schedules, maintain deadlines, work within budgets, set priorities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience with marketing and educational programming a plus. Candidate must be willing to travel to represent the AFA at meetings and exhibition openings both nationally and internationally.
