Paid Intern – Dangler Graduate Curatorial Fall Internship
The Photography Department at the institute is seeking a Dangler Graduate Intern who will assist one of the Department of Photography curators with exhibition specific research projects.
The Dangler intern would help research the upcoming exhibition, Andre Kertesz: The Cartes Postales. The Hungarian photographer emigrated to Paris in 1925, and there made some of his most famous and enduring images. For a short period—only from 1925 to 1928—he often printed these as contact prints on small, inexpensive postcard stock with a rich matte finish. Tightly composed and carefully printed, these serve not only as a record of his photographic rigor but also as a way of communicating with his loved ones in his native Hungary, keeping them apprised of his increasing progress. Now rare and highly treasured, the cartes postales address a formative period in Kertesz’s career, along with issues of photographic portability and circulation, and the historical context of emigre culture and artistic communities in interwar Paris.
The intern will conduct both primary and secondary research related to the exhibition and available photographs. The successful candidate will demonstrate resourcefulness and attention to detail. Knowledge of the history of photography in interwar Paris is a plus; knowledge of Hungarian desirable but certainly not expected.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will be either currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Art History or have already earned an M.A. in Art History within one year; will have a record of experience at other museums; and should have taken a least one graduate Art History course emphasizing the medium of photography. Successful candidates will have the ability to carry out independent primary and secondary source research across the whole history of photography, an attention to detail, an ability to work well with people, and excellent writing skills.
