The VMFA is currently seeking an established exhibition designer to collaboratively design high quality exhibitions that engage audiences both local and statewide. The candidate will lead a team of exhibit, graphics and lighting designers through an exciting portfolio of changing exhibits and permanent collection initiatives. This position will also be responsible for designing and executing art and gallery installations, large and small with varying degrees of technical complexities. While articulating project specific and museum-wide design goals this position works cooperatively with all divisions to achieve those goals.
The successful candidate will possess a positive nature, lead by mentoring in a collaborative framework while elevating an already high design aesthetic. The candidate will also have a strong background in project and budget management delivering projects on time and on budget. Essential qualifications include, a minimum of five years, with a desired ten years of experience in a museum, gallery or foundation. Experienced with museum grade conservation materials used in fabrication of displays. Deep knowledge of fabrication and joinery technics with the following materials including: mdf/mdo, fabrics, laminate, plywood and plexiglass. Practical design skills include advanced experience in 2D and 3D design, graphic design, visual communication through elevation and plan drawings, multimedia, lighting, preparation, and installation of example exhibit displays. Personnel experience with large team management, excellent interpersonal communication skills, leadership, mentoring and negotiation skills are essential to the success of this role and department.
Also required is a Bachelor of Arts degree in exhibition or graphic design, industrial design, commercial art, architecture or fine arts with a Masters preferred. A portfolio reflective of all applicable design related projects.
