Curator of the John Rhoden Collection
The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is seeking a curatorial professional to fill the position of Curator of the John Rhoden Collection. This is a four-year position responsible for organizing a traveling exhibition and publishing a major book about John Rhoden and facilitating the placement of his work into major museum collections throughout the United States.
Reporting to the Edna S. Tuttleman Director of the Museum, this position will conduct original research about the life and work of the artist John Rhoden (1918-2001). He/she will develop a major scholarly publication that will be jointly produced by PAFA and a university press, including serving as the primary author and inviting and editing the work of at least three additional scholars. He/she will organize an exhibition that will originate at PAFA and travel to at least two additional venues. He/she will also place John Rhoden’s work by gift from PAFA to museums throughout the United States and keep careful records of those placements. This position will collaborate closely with PAFA’s conservators and independent conservators to prepare works for the exhibition, and also collaborate closely with other departments at PAFA, including the Museum Registrars, Preparators, and Educators, as well as PAFA’s School, Marketing, Admissions, and Development teams to ensure that the exhibition and publication contribute richly to PAFA’s mission as a School and Museum of American art. This position will serve as the primary spokesman for gaining John Rhoden his long overdue recognition within the art world by presenting lectures and papers about his life and career and sharing his story within professional networks.
Qualified applicants will have a master’s degree, Ph.D. preferred; three to five years of museum experience. Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in African American art of the 20th century, excellent written and interpersonal skills, superior communication skills in order to interact with individuals at all levels, and strong organizational skills. Some professional travel, evenings and weekends required.
