The Gus Fisher Gallery is the University of Auckland’s public art gallery and part of the University’s commitment to supporting contemporary creative practice research. The Gallery aims to present an innovative programme of curated exhibitions of contemporary art that fosters discussion of contemporary artistic practices nationally and internationally.

Curator of Contemporary Art

Reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, the Curator will strategically position the Gallery for a programme of world class contemporary art and exhibitions that engages key stakeholder communities.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to set the direction of the Gus Fisher as one of New Zealand’s premier Galleries.

You will be responsible for oversight management and growth of the Gallery’s collections and you will be able to demonstrate an innovative and engaging vision for curatorial and collections activities. It is essential that you have a minimum of seven years’ experience within the contemporary arts sector and a proven record of successful curation of contemporary art exhibitions. It will be an advantage if you have experience of working with practitioners and/or institutions across national borders. Ideally, you will be qualified in a relevant field such as art, design, curatorial studies, arts management, art history, or other field pertinent to contemporary art.

The Gallery is an engaged partner in the intellectual work of the University, involving students, faculty and staff in the research, development and realisation of aspects of its exhibition programme. In accord with your vision for contemporary art, there is also an opportunity to innovate that programme and to pursue exhibitions or projects pertinent to the University’s mission beyond the Gallery building. To this end, you will have a proven history of engaging successfully with artists and researchers in the achievement of exhibitions and/or contemporary art projects.

This will be a very challenging and rewarding role and a rare occasion to shape one of New Zealand’s leading galleries and be pivotal in creating a world-class vision for contemporary artistic practices.
