Project Manager, Curatorial (Full Time)

Location: Bentonville, AR

Position Summary
The Project Manager, Curatorial works under the immediate supervision of the Curator in primary service of the curatorial program and larger goals of the department as a whole. The Project Manager, Curatorial is responsible for providing integral project management support to the curatorial staff and managing all administrative aspects of the installations and exhibitions in his/her assigned portfolio. The Project Manager, Curatorial possesses masterful organizational acumen, balancing multiple competing projects and deadlines simultaneously and ensuring deliverables are produced on time and under budget. She/he works closely with the curatorial staff, team members in the Exhibitions & Interpretation department, and other colleagues inside and outside the Museum. The Project Manager, Curatorial interfaces with contemporary artists, dealers, collectors, and colleagues on a regular basis, planning and facilitating meetings and ensuring the highest level of professionalism.
Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
  • Provide project management leadership for the developing exhibition program and other projects, including project-specific calendar management, artist convening, travel, and communication.
  • Initiate and coordinate budgeting process and reporting activities of Curatorial Department.
  • Manage the production of department-wide initiatives, such as the operations plan, strategic planning documents, and collections development plan.
  • Serve as curatorial point person for publication projects.
  • Provide organizational support for curatorial projects, including calendar management, cross-team communication, art movement, labels, and checklists.
  • Manage resident scholar and intern programs, and assist with artist residency program
    • Draft, promote, and publicize the calls for scholars, interns, and artists through appropriate outlets
    • Schedule and participate in finalist reviews/interviews
    • Orient residents to the Museum and community
    • Ensure residents’ needs are met on-site (housing, transportation, etc.)
    • Liaise with facilities and exhibitions teams to ensure physical spaces are prepared for resident activity
    • Facilitate program evaluations; create and maintain database of alumni of all resident programs
  • Manage offers of art across the department, ensuring that each inquiry is tracked, evaluated, and addressed.
  • Assist with development, compilation, and maintenance of curatorial records and files for acquisitions and exhibition activity. Create and maintain artist and project files for resident activity.
  • Coordinate and convene meetings at the Museum of scholars, artists, and others. Serve as the point person for calendaring, on-site logistics, and travel for these convenings.
  • Participate in the acquisitions process including obtaining information from galleries and artists, preparing for committee meetings, and coordinating and producing associated internal paperwork and presentations.
  • Manage communications activities of the Curatorial Department including the development and maintenance of mailing and contact lists pertaining to museum colleagues at other museums, galleries, dealers, and artists.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and Traits:
  • B.A. in art history or related field required, M.A. is a plus.
  • Previous experience with curatorial work preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill in organization and project management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Work Experience:
  • 3-5 years’ project management experience required, with demonstrated success in coordinating multiple and varied schedules of both people and spaces.
  • 3-5 years’ work experience with professional artists..
  • 2 years’ work experience with art galleries or museums.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will satisfy the minimum requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and familiarity with database software.
  • Demonstrated research skills.
  • Familiarity with cataloguing techniques.
  • Excellent customer relations skills (in person and on the telephone).
  • Records management, etc.
  • Exemplary writing skills.
  • Understanding and experience in budget maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Positive approach to support fellow staff and goals of museum.
  • Ability to maintain highest levels of confidentiality and discretion.

  • Work environment:  Work will be performed in an office environment, museum spaces, construction site, and in communities served. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Position requires some independent overnight travel. Occasionally the work schedule may include evenings and weekends.
