Assistant/ Associate Curator of Modern Art

Department: Curatorial Department
Reports to: Senior Curator

General Responsibilities

The Assistant/Associate Curator of Modern Art is responsible for the research and interpretation of the Museum’s collection of European and American Modern Art. Working closely with the Senior Curator, this position manages the Museum’s collection-based provenance research and participates in the installation and rotation of the permanent collection galleries devoted to the Menil’s renowned holdings of Surrealist art. In addition, this curator works in various capabilities to conceive, assist or execute in-house, traveling, and temporary exhibitions. Working broadly access departments, the position has a major role in the Museum’s small and dynamic curatorial team and is expected to help build the collection and support the institutional priorities and mission of the Menil Collection.

Specific Duties

  1. Curate exhibitions of Modern art, often accompanied by publications highlighting the curator’s research
  2. Work closely with the Senior Curator to develop regular gallery rotations as well as long- term installation plans for the Surrealist
  3. Collaborate with Menil staff in Curatorial, Conservation, and Collection Management Departments to continue provenance research on the Museum’s collection of Modern
  4. Work with the Menil’s Director and Senior Curator to propose and research
  5. Work closely and cooperatively with the Director of Advancement and other members of the Advancement Department, to cultivate patrons and identify and secure funding sources and
  6. Maintain a strong network of artists, dealers, curators, museum directors, and collectors and promote the local, national, and international profile of the Menil

 

Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree or D. in art history with a specialization in European and American Modern art. A scholarly focus on Surrealism is preferred.
  2. Minimum 3-5 years of curatorial experience with demonstrated scholarship in the
  3. Strong preference for candidates with reading and speaking proficiency in
  4. A specialization, and/ or professional or scholarly commitment to Surrealism
  5. Knowledge of international standards and best practices for provenance
  6. Excellent communication and public speaking
