Assistant Curator

The Art Students League of New York maintains a historically significant collection of approximately 2,000 works of American art from the late 19th Century to the present created by former and current students and instructors. The Assistant Curator will play a significant role in expanding the League’s exhibition programming and managing the League’s permanent collection and artwork holdings. The Assistant Curator will work closely with the Curator on collection cataloging, deaccessions, acquisitions, and art storage. She/he will also contribute to the conception and production of exhibitions, provide administrative support for the League’s on-site gallery, and work collaboratively with other staff members to plan auctions, art sales, and related programming for the League’s first annual open studio event.

Job Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Curator, the Assistant Curator will develop an exhibitions program for presentation in the Art Students League lobby, office, and café.
  • Help to cost-efficiently manage the League’s permanent collection including documenting and cataloging artworks in the League’s holdings, examining artworks for potential deaccession, and collection development.
  • Work with the Curator and Development team to oversee art auctions, exhibition related programs, and special fundraising events.
  • Assist with exhibition planning for the League’s on-site gallery.
  • Write condition reports, wall labels, and curatorial text.
  • Supervise gallery attendants and assist with daily operations of the gallery.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with instructors, students, staff, and the Art Students League community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Unique Requirements of this Job:

  • MA in art history, museum studies, or related field.
  • 2-3 years experience in an art gallery, museum, or similar organization.
  • Familiarity with best practices for collections care and management.
  • Experience with exhibition development and coordination.
  • Excellent written, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient with Microsoft office; knowledge of collection management software (ArtBase, TMS, Past Perfect, FileMaker or similar program).
  • Prior experience managing art sales and auctions a plus.
  • Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as needed.
