Call for applications – Curator-in-Residence Programme

Established in 2015, the Ming Contemporary Art Museum (McaM) in Shanghai distinguishes itself through its promotion of contemporary art activities based on visual performance. With the aim to facilitate and further the communication between young curators from abroad and Chinese artists, McaM decides to launch a curator-in-residence programme in 2018. The programme is devoted to encouraging young curators to challenge the routine of exhibition-making through experimental |curatorial practice and close collaboration with local artists.

Proposals will be reviewed by a selection panel chaired by Qiu Zhijie, director of McaM. For each edition, 2-3 applicants will be selected as Fellows and each is eligible for a two-month residence in Shanghai and other cities in China as well as a fund of RMB25,000 (about USD3,600) for travel expenses, research and development. In the meantime, the museum will arrange visits and meetings for the participants to help them better communicate and work with local artists / |curators. By the end of the residence programme, each participant is expected to submit a research report and an exhibition proposal. The panel will review and select one winning proposal which will be put into realization with a funding of up to RMB200,000 (USD30,000) from McaM.

WHAT WE OFFER
  • International travel expenses (1 return trip);
  • Domestic travel expenses (2 return trips within China);
  • Accommodation for 2 months;
  • Per diem;
  • A budget for the installation of the winning proposal; accommodation and per diem during the installation period;
  • Assistance to arrange visits to artist studios, art spaces and curators.
WHO WE LOOK FOR
  • Master’s or doctoral candidates in the field of curatorial studies and / or young independent curators;
  • Under 45 years old;
  • Demonstrating an interest in topics such as Chinese contemporary art and China within globalization.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
  • A resume;
  • A proposal, which shall include:

1. Statement of your curatorial research and practice;

2. Your vision of participating in the programme;

3. Your research plan;

4. A preliminary exhibition proposal.

DEADLINE

The finalists will be informed via email and announced on McaM website (www.mcam.io) in September, 2018.
