Andrew W. Mellon Postgraduate Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Art Practices
Wesleyan University’s Center for Pedagogical Innovation invites applications for an Andrew W. Mellon Postgraduate Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Art Practices (New Media, Social Practices) beginning July 1, 2019. We seek an artist, designer or curator whose research falls within the purview of new media, interdisciplinarity and social practice. Candidates should have the ability to critique diverse categories of social interaction through their creative practice and provide a framework for students to experiment with and revise prevailing distinctions between creative and intellectual fields while engaging in open dialogue about topics in contemporary art and life. The successful candidate will be able to offer students sustained access and rigorous exposure to interdisciplinary art practices in order to stimulate open consideration of the role of art in communities. Other areas involved in this conversation would necessarily include: the nature of audience-artist relationships; the erosion of disciplinary boundaries; the potential for creative practice in political mobilization; and the role of art in society and across the arts, humanities, and social sciences in a liberal arts curriculum. The applicant selected for this position would be responsible for a three course teaching load per year, divided into two Fall courses and one Spring course. These courses will be project-based, hands-on studio courses in areas closely related to the Fellow’s research or practice. Additionally, the Fellow will collaborate with the new Associate Director of Visual Arts in the Center for the Arts to organize and curate an exhibition and/or a series of workshops emphasizing the complex and evolving nature of art instruction and practice today. This position will offer research and travel funds and is renewable for a second year contingent upon performance.
