Associate Curator (Visual Arts)

Salary: £34,230 – £38,730 per annum, inclusive of Inner London Weighting (dependent on skills and experience)

Permanent, full time. Grade D

An opportunity has arisen for an Associate Curator to join the Visual Arts team at the Barbican, a world renowned multi-disciplinary Art Centre. The visual arts are crucially important to the Barbican’s success. The Art Gallery is dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions covering modern and contemporary art, design and architecture. The Curve is devoted to the commissioning of large scale site specific installations by contemporary artists. The Barbican aims to serve both artists and audiences and excels in the presentation of exhibitions that are thoughtful, curatorially ambitious and which often focus on timely reassessments and inter-disciplinary practice.

As Associate Curator you will be responsible for curating, developing, planning and managing exhibitions, events, projects and commissions, whilst working closely with the Head of Visual Arts and the Curatorial team. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional knowledge of 20th and 21st century art and design, including performance art, as well as the intersection between different art forms. A proven substantial, internationally recognised track record of curating within a gallery or museum environment is also essential.

You will have the experience to curate, or provide curatorial support on, exhibitions that are groundbreaking, but which also appeal to a broad audience.  You will need great curatorial ideas, excellent communication and organisational skills, and the commitment and drive to deliver exhibitions to the highest standard.  Highly developed written skills are also essential.

The role requires the post holder to be self-motivated with the ability and experience to supervise or manage a small team. Experience in budget development and management is also required.
