The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or who are making British history and culture. In recent years the Gallery has attracted around 2 million visits and is among London’s most popular museums. It reaches and engages these, and further UK and global audiences, with its extensive display, exhibition, research, learning, outreach, publishing, digital and national programmes.
This maternity-cover post provides an opportunity for an outgoing, creative and highly motivated individual with an academic interest in British art to join the curatorial team at the National Portrait Gallery. This post involves providing high-level administrative and curatorial support to a team of senior curatorial staff and collections curators and provides a good opportunity to work with curatorial staff in a National collection.
As well as providing research and administrative assistance to curators in the Tudor – Regency team, there will be a particular focus upon helping to organise Research events as directed by the Senior Curator for Research. Otherwise, the post-holder would be mainly expected to work on commissions, acquisitions, displays and exhibitions in the areas of twentieth-century and contemporary portraiture. Working with the Victorian-Contemporary team, the post holder will be expected to research secondary and primary documentation for the purposes of acquisition and assist with the development of a small number of exhibition and display projects. They will have excellent writing and communication skills and experience of working in a curatorial capacity in public museums or galleries.
The successful candidate will be responsible to the Senior Curator Research and 16th-Century Collections but will work across two teams.
