The British Museum is looking for a Project Curator to conduct research and object selection in order to assist the curator for Islamic and Modern Middle East art in the completion of the publication of an illustrated book on the British Museum’s collection of Modern and Contemporary Middle East art, and to undertake related activities on the collection.
Key areas of responsibility:
In this role, you will assist with object selection and photo orders for the book. The post holder will also undertake object research, assist on the object descriptions and artists’ biographies, work on the Collection Management database, specifically on the Middle East art entries, upgrading object descriptions and biographies as required, thus creating an excellent research tool. In this role you will also undertake research to lead to new acquisitions of Modern and Contemporary Middle East art. You will also work on the logistical aspects of the collection as regards storage and display.
Person specification:
With a BA (or equivalent) in History of Art, Middle East art, or Islamic art, you will have sound knowledge of modern and contemporary Middle East art. (acquired through a variety of means). An MA is desirable. We are looking for someone with excellent IT skills including databases and social media. You will have demonstrable experience in handling and deriving information from artefacts (2D and 3D) and ability to undertake research. Your experience will also include publication and editorial experience and museum work (including exhibitions), university or extra-mural teaching. You will be a team player, excellent communicator, able to work under pressure and manage and organise information.
