198 Contemporary Arts & Learning announces the appointment of Nimco Kulmiye Hussein as Artistic Director

A Finnish-born curator and writer based in London, Hussein’s practice is rooted in postcolonial and queer-feminist methodologies, with a deep commitment to participatory curation and community-focused engagement. Their work interrogates cultural narratives and institutional frameworks, foregrounding marginalised voices and fostering critical dialogues within and beyond the art world.

Hussein has a track record of curating across multiple international contexts, collaborating with artists, thinkers, and cultural institutions to realise dynamic exhibitions and programmes that traverse disciplinary boundaries.
As a writer, Hussein contributes critical perspectives to platforms including Frieze, Artsy, and exhibition catalogues, engaging with contemporary art’s potential for social transformation. Their writing works in tandem with their curatorial practice, offering an expanded lens through which art and culture can be interrogated and reimagined.

Hussein’s influence extends beyond the gallery space, with advisory roles at the New Museum of Architecture & Design in Helsinki and jury positions for international festivals, reflecting their broader commitment to reshaping the cultural landscape.

Hussein holds a Master’s degree in Culture, Criticism, and Curation with Distinction from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, and a Master of Arts in Fashion and Design Studies with Distinction from Aalto University.

In their new role as Artistic Director at 198CAL, Hussein will shape the organisation’s vision, driving programming that continues to challenge conventions, amplify underrepresented voices, and position 198CAL as a site of critical artistic and social discourse.
