Aaron Seeto Appointed as Hirshhorn Deputy Director

The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, has welcomed Aaron Seeto as its new Deputy Director, a role he assumed with immediate effect on February 12. Seeto, who previously helmed the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (MACAN) in Jakarta since 2016, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the Hirshhorn, following his departure from MACAN in December 2023.

A Fresh Perspective on Art and Accessibility

Seeto’s enthusiasm for his new position is palpable. He expressed his admiration for the Hirshhorn’s vibrant collection, its forward-thinking approach to public spaces, and its commitment to making art more accessible to the public. Seeto is particularly excited to integrate his experiences with diverse Asian audiences into the Hirshhorn’s future endeavors, promising a dynamic blend of international art perspectives.

A Rich Background in Art and Curation

Before joining the Hirshhorn, Seeto’s career spanned various prestigious roles, including his time as the curatorial manager of Asian and Pacific art at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane. Notably, he led the curatorial team for the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art between 2015 and 2016. His leadership at MACAN, which opened in 2017 under his directorship, was marked by significant achievements in the art world, especially in showcasing modern and contemporary art in Indonesia and beyond.

During his tenure at MACAN, Seeto curated exhibitions that highlighted the evolution of contemporary art on both a local and global scale. He was instrumental in organizing major surveys of renowned artists from across Asia and beyond, contributing to MACAN’s reputation as a key player in art education and public accessibility in Indonesia. His efforts in launching diverse arts education programs helped establish MACAN as a vital part of Indonesia’s educational landscape.

Welcomed with Open Arms

Melissa Chiu, the director of the Hirshhorn Museum, praised Seeto’s accomplishments at MACAN, noting his adeptness in organizing collections, curating exhibitions, and establishing comprehensive educational initiatives. Chiu believes Seeto’s expertise will greatly contribute to the Hirshhorn, especially as the museum seeks to broaden its audience reach and continue its campus transformation.

A New Chapter for the Hirshhorn

Located on the National Mall, the Hirshhorn is a pivotal institution in the Smithsonian ensemble, renowned for its extensive collections of postwar American and European art. With Aaron Seeto’s appointment, the museum is poised to enhance its influence and accessibility, promising exciting new developments in the world of modern and contemporary art.
