Tuesday, September 7, 2021

ALT(ering) + SHIFT(ing) + COMM(uning) welcomes curator Gantuya Badamgarav for a conversation on independent strategies of curatorial promotion and international artistic collaboration in Mongolia.

Gantuya Badamgarav (Mongolian: Бадамгаравын Гантуяа) is an art curator. After working as an economist for many years, in 2012 she founded Art Space 976+ in Ulaanbaatar – a space for the promotion of contemporary art. Art Space 976+ hosted experimental exhibitions, performances, and open discussions with leading contemporary Mongolian artists in collaboration with renowned international artists.

Badamgarav also established the independent non-profit organization Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association (MCASA), through which Mongolia participated at the Venice Biennale for the first time in 2015. She extended this endeavor by organizing the 2017 and 2019 Mongolia Pavilions, working as a curator for the latter. Titled A Temporarily, the project transformed ancient mediums of oral expression, presenting a site-specific installation by Jantsankhorol Erdenebayar, with a sound installation made in collaboration with Carsten Nicolai and Mongolian traditional throat singers.
