apexart 2021-22 NYC Open Call results

Through apexart’s 2021-22 NYC Open Call four idea-based proposals have been selected from 450 eligible submissions. They were evaluated by more than 400 individual jurors, including 23 university classes and 3 specialized high school classes resulting in over 16,000 votes being cast. Proposals and jurors came from over 89 countries. The following proposals will be presented as exhibitions in apexart’s New York City space during its 2021-2022 season.

Recontarnos (Rewriting Us) 

La Revuelta (Jimena Galán Day, Christa Krings, Renata Alvarez, Andrea López, Maya Juracán) (Guatemala City, Guatemala)

Reclaims historical and social narratives that traditionally reflect the viewpoints of men, prioritizing the voices of Central American women as a means to resist patriarchy within the art world.

 

A Thousand Secrets

Mae A. Miller (London, United Kingdom)

Explores the myriad connections between the world’s oceans and human life by unsettling conventional modes of listening and unearthing entangled histories of extraction.

 

Trans Dance Revolution 

After Party Collective (Vidisha-Fadescha and Shaunak Mahbubani) (New Delhi, India)

Locates the site of the party as a political space where trans* folx from the Global South have agency to embody the rhythms, adornments, and choreographies of our collective futures.

 

Oh, I Love Brazilian Women 

Luiza Testa (São Paulo, Brazil)
Challenging the sexualized stereotypes of Brazilian women that trace back to colonial times and extend through misreadings of the Carnival and its imagery.
