apexart Announces Winners of NYC Open Call

We received 417 proposals that were voted on by an international panel of nearly 700 jurors from many disciplines. 72 countries were represented on both sides. In addition to many individuals, 16 international university classes made jurying part of their syllabus. Jurors were asked to read at least 50 anonymous submissions, with many reading over a hundred. Nearly 20,000 votes were cast to determine the five winning proposals that will become exhibitions in the 2023-2024 season at apexart in New York City.

The winners are:

1. Welcome Home
Submitted by Jeroen Stevens – Belgium
Mobilizing art as a radically transformative tool to challenge the revolving door between incarceration and homelessness in black American communities.

2. If Shadows Could Shine
Submitted by Yi Cao – United States
Visualizing the erasure and displacement of marginalized communities through the metaphor of shadow.

3. Build what we hate. Destroy what we love.
Submitted by Fabiola R. Delgado – United States
Amplifying the voices of Venezuelan migrants by articulating the social and cultural components that make up their mass exodus.

4. Fitter, Happier, More Productive
Submitted by Lexington Davis – Netherlands
Explores the toxic underbelly of capitalist wellness culture, proposing instead alternative understandings of wellbeing that confront structural inequalities.

5. Fruits of Labor— Reframing Motherhood and Artmaking
Submitted by Bruna Shapira – Brazil
Calls for a shift in the paradigms of both mothering and artistic expression by arguing that motherhood is not in conflict with artmaking but rather the prevailing narratives framing womanhood.

Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone for submitting your proposal this round and believing in our process. The jury make up always changes, so please consider submitting a proposal to our International Open Call in February 2023, or being a juror by sending an email to juror@apexart.org by the first week of January 2023.
