Art Basel Paris to Close Early Amid Planned Weekend Protests
#Art Basel #news #ProtestArt Basel Paris has announced that its 2026 edition will close two days earlier than scheduled, following concerns over further demonstrations expected across the French capital this weekend.
The fair, held at the Grand Palais, will welcome visitors with Friday admission tickets until 7 pm on 23 October, but will remain closed on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October.
The decision comes after widespread protests across France on 17 October over deteriorating conditions in public schools and the rising cost of living. The demonstrations escalated into clashes with police, looting and property damage, prompting heightened security measures across Paris.
According to Artnet News, Art Basel’s Chief Artistic Officer Vincenzo de Bellis and Paris Director Karim Crippa informed exhibitors that the decision was made in light of potential demonstrations and to safeguard visitors.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Art Basel expressed regret over the cancellation of the weekend programme, thanking its galleries, artists, partners, visitors and wider community for their support. Organisers confirmed that Saturday and Sunday ticket holders would be contacted directly with further information.
The fair, which opened to invited guests on 20 October, features 211 galleries. Other art fairs taking place across Paris are also monitoring the situation, with some adjusting their opening hours ahead of the planned demonstrations.
