Italian curator Cecilia Alemani has been appointed curator of the 15th Taipei Biennial, set to open in 2027 at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM).

Organised by TFAM since 1998, the Taipei Biennial is one of Asia’s longest-running and most influential contemporary art biennials. The exhibition has established itself as a major platform for artistic exchange, bringing together international and regional perspectives while addressing pressing social, political, ecological and technological issues.

Alemani is internationally recognised for her large-scale exhibitions and public art projects. Since 2011, she has served as Donald R. Mullen, Jr. Director and Chief Curator of High Line Art in New York, where she has commissioned projects by artists including Simone Leigh, Barbara Kruger, Rashid Johnson, Faith Ringgold and El Anatsui.

She gained global prominence as Artistic Director of the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, where she curated The Milk of Dreams, an exhibition inspired by the writings of Leonora Carrington. Bringing together 213 artists from 58 countries, the exhibition explored themes of transformation, technology, identity and the relationship between humans and the natural world, attracting more than 800,000 visitors.

Commenting on her appointment, Alemani said: “It is a profound privilege to be entrusted with the next edition of the Taipei Biennial, an exhibition with a remarkable history of shaping contemporary art discourse. In our current global climate, platforms like the Taipei Biennial carry an even greater urgency. They are vital spaces for creative expression and cultural resilience.”

TFAM Director Li-Chen Loh described the biennial as a meeting point between global artistic movements and Asia’s distinct cultural contexts, expressing confidence that Alemani’s curatorial approach would create new opportunities for dialogue between local and international audiences.
