Çelenk Bafra Appointed Artistic Director of Istanbul Modern
Istanbul Modern has announced the return of Çelenk Bafra as its artistic director, effective September 16, 2024. Bafra, who previously served as the museum’s curator and director of exhibitions and programs from 2011 to 2018, will now oversee Istanbul Modern’s art programs, collections, and curatorial practices as the museum approaches its 20th anniversary. In her new role, she will also strengthen international collaborations and projects.
With over 20 years of experience, Bafra has curated exhibitions and led art programs across Europe and Türkiye. She has held key positions at the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), Istanbul Modern, and most recently, SAHA—Supporting Contemporary Art from Türkiye. She has also served on the board of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM) in Marseille.
Istanbul Modern, Türkiye’s first museum of modern and contemporary art, has welcomed over 10 million visitors since its founding in 2004. While a new museum director search continues following the opening of its Renzo Piano-designed building last year, Bafra’s return marks a new era for the institution.
