Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care
Tuesday, February 9, 2021
ALT(ering) + SHIFT(ing) + COMM(uning) is back for its first event of 2021! The series will welcome curator Elena Sorokina and artist Alexandre Erre to discuss the Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care, a nomadic project experimenting with long-term strategies of care, solidarity, and proximity.
Founded in April 2020 in France by curators Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez and Elena Sorokina, the initiative researches and supports artistic practices that enact care and use care strategies, especially in situations where institutions disengage, fail or neglect. Bringing together curatorial, artistic, and health research and practices, the Initiative has been developing and testing methods of working that have been adapted for the current pandemic conditions: social distancing, travel restrictions, and lockdowns. The Initiative focuses on the following questions: How do we take care of, while also cultivating care in, the most vulnerable and fragile individuals in our direct or indirect neighborhoods and communities? In what ways can these gestures be part of a larger re-thinking of the system of production, distribution, and mutual solidarity in the field of contemporary art?
Alexandre Erre lives and works between France and New-Caledonia, where he was born. Alexandre’s practice revolves around his native island and the processes of exoticization, racializing, gendering, domination and cultural hierarchies related to it. Positioned at the intersection of gender, sexuality, and community, the artist’s questions lean on his personal background and allude to his assumed insularity and diasporic status. Alexandre has been collaborating with the Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care.
