Eszter Szakács appointed as the Guest Programme Curator of the 41st EVA International

EVA International is thrilled to welcome Eszter Szakács as the Curator of the Guest Programme for the 41st edition of Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art. Szakács joins an esteemed curatorial team including Iarlaith Ní Fheorais and Roy Claire Potter, who are the Selectors of EVA’s Platform Commissions. The team, under the leadership of EVA Director Matt Packer, will collaborate to develop an engaging programme across various venues and partnerships in Limerick city, scheduled from 29 August to 26 October 2025.

Eszter Szakács on Her New Role

In a statement regarding her new role, Szakács expressed her excitement and vision for the upcoming biennial. “I am honoured to be appointed as Curator of the Guest Programme of the 41st EVA International. My proposal focuses on a collaborative and horizontal working method, aiming to facilitate a process of reciprocal exchanges,” Szakács writes. She looks forward to a newly collaborative approach with EVA International in areas ranging from exhibition-making to infrastructure-building and implementing circular modes of hosting. Szakács believes this collaboration will pioneer a novel path for what an international biennial can represent in 2025.

About Eszter Szakács

Eszter Szakács is a distinguished curator and researcher currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, University of Amsterdam. Her work involves the project IMAGINART—Imagining Institutions Otherwise: Art, Politics, and State Transformation. In 2023, Szakács curated the research-cum-solo exhibition Dóra Maurer–SUMUS–We Are Together at de Appel in Amsterdam and co-edited Solidarity Must Be Defended, an anthology of visual arts projects exploring themes of solidarity during the Cold War. She has been an integral part of the grassroots art initiative OFF-Biennale Budapest, a recipient of the Goethe Medal award in 2023 and participated in documenta fifteen in 2022.
