Francesco Manacorda appointed new Director of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea
The Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea is set to welcome a fresh perspective as Francesco Manacorda assumes the position of Director, starting January 1, 2024. This appointment comes as a result of a meticulous selection process, guided by a Judging Committee led by Francesca Lavazza, President of the museum. Manacorda, a seasoned professional with an impressive track record, is poised to steer the institution into an exciting new chapter.
A Visionary Leader
Francesco Manacorda brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Notably, he served as the Artistic Director of the V-A-C Foundation from 2017 to 2022 and held the position of Artistic Director at Tate Liverpool from 2012 to 2017. His journey also includes directorship at Artissima (2010-2012) and a curatorial role at the Barbican Art Gallery (2007-2009). Manacorda’s expertise extends to academia, where he was a Visiting Lecturer in the Curating Contemporary Art department at the Royal College of Art, London, from 2006 to 2011. His curatorial achievements include co-curating the 2016 Liverpool Biennial and the 11th Taipei Biennial in 2018.
The Selection Process
Manacorda’s appointment followed a rigorous and transparent selection process. A Judging Committee, led by Francesca Lavazza, meticulously evaluated candidates. This committee included prominent figures from the art world such as Richard Armstrong, former Director of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation; Andrea Ruben Levi, a collector and Friend Benefactor of Castello di Rivoli, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the New Museum in New York; Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, a collector and President of the foundation bearing her name, as well as President of Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT; and Sir Nicholas Serota, President of Arts Council England and former Director of Tate.
A New Era
Francesco Manacorda is set to take over from Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, who has been leading the museum since 2009 and has held the position of Director since January 1, 2016. As Christov-Bakargiev prepares to retire on December 31, 2023, Manacorda steps into the directorship, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a compelling vision for the future of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea.
