Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Announces December 2026 Opening Date

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open on 11 December 2026.

Located on Saadiyat Island and designed by the late architect Frank Gehry, the museum will focus on modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. Its programme and collection will bring together artists, perspectives and artistic practices from across different regions and generations.

A New Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has been conceived as a platform for cultural exchange, artistic dialogue and new approaches to global art history. Its collection, developed since 2009, combines regional and international perspectives, reflecting the United Arab Emirates’ position at the intersection of cultures and trade routes.

The museum will present work across painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image and new media. Its displays will explore themes including abstraction, popular culture, land, language and storytelling.

Rather than following a strictly chronological structure, exhibitions will establish connections between geographies, generations and artistic practices. Visitors will be encouraged to navigate the collection through overlapping narratives of time, place and theme.

Further details about the museum’s collection, commissions and opening programme will be announced in the coming months.

Architecture by Frank Gehry

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi encompasses a total built-up area of 80,000 square metres, including 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space and 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas.

The building contains 30 galleries connected by a central atrium. Its architecture is defined by ten sculptural cones reaching heights of up to 88 metres. Nine are clad in stainless steel mesh, while one is constructed using onyx and glass.

The cones provide natural ventilation and shade, contributing to the building’s energy efficiency while creating its distinctive silhouette. The museum’s extensive indoor and outdoor spaces have been designed to accommodate the scale, varied media and experimental character of art produced since 1960.

Saadiyat Cultural District

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will join the expanding network of institutions within Saadiyat Cultural District, which includes Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.

It will also become part of the international Guggenheim network alongside museums in New York, Venice and Bilbao, while maintaining an identity shaped by Abu Dhabi and the wider region.

The museum is expected to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as an international centre for contemporary artistic production, research, education and cultural exchange. Public programming connected to Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is already taking place across the United Arab Emirates.
