Horikawa and Takahashi Announced as Co-Curators for Japan Pavilion 2026
The Japan Foundation has announced that Ei Arakawa Nash will represent Japan at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2026. His exhibition at the Japan Pavilion will be co-curated by Lisa Horikawa (Senior Curator and Director at the National Gallery Singapore) and Mizuki Takahashi (Executive Director and Chief Curator at the Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile, Hong Kong).
This marks a historic first for the Japan Pavilion: both the artist and curators are based outside of Japan, bringing a dynamic and diverse perspective to commemorate the Pavilion’s 70th anniversary.
Exhibition Vision
Arakawa Nash’s exhibition will feature performances by his young twins alongside baby dolls, offering a sharp and humorous critique that reflects on the experiences of LGBTQ communities and the Japanese diaspora. The project promises to blend personal narrative and broader social commentary, challenging conventional views of identity, belonging, and nationhood.
