Juliane Bischoff Appointed as New Curator of Portikus
#Appointed curator #AppointmentPortikus and Städelschule have announced the appointment of Juliane Bischoff as the new curator of Portikus. She will assume the position on November 5, 2025, succeeding Liberty Adrien, who earlier this year became Head Curator at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. Carina Bukuts will continue in her role until the end of 2025 to ensure a smooth transition.
From 2023 to 2025, Bischoff served as artistic director of Klosterruine Berlin, where she developed an ambitious exhibition and performance program featuring artists including James Gregory Atkinson, Dora Budor, Bryana Fritz, Richard Frater, Erika Landström, Mira Mann, Kate Newby, Augustas Serapinas, Mikołaj Sobczak, Miriam Stoney, and Leyla Yenirce. Her curatorial approach at Klosterruine was noted for its experimental and interdisciplinary focus, engaging with the site’s historical and architectural context.
Since 2019, Bischoff has also been a curator at the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism, where she co-curated the critically acclaimed group exhibitions TO BE SEEN. queer lives 1900–1950 (2022) and Tell me about yesterday tomorrow (2019). Her forthcoming and final exhibition at the institution, … to leave a space in which the din of war might die down, will open on October 30, 2025, and run until July 12, 2026, presenting works by artists including Hiwa K, Tarik Kiswanson, Selma Selman, Hito Steyerl, Sung Tieu, Miloš Trakilović, and Ian Waelder.
Earlier in her career, Bischoff worked as assistant curator at Kunsthalle Wien (2016–2019). Alongside her curatorial practice, she is active as a writer, editor, and guest lecturer, contributing to numerous publications and discourses within contemporary art.
Bischoff’s appointment marks a new chapter for Portikus, continuing its legacy as a space for experimental and critical contemporary art.
