Julieta González Named Head of Exhibitions for the Wexner Center for the Arts
#Head of Exhibitions #Julieta GonzálezStarting October 7, 2024, Julieta González will take on the role of Head of Exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University. Known for its multidisciplinary contemporary arts programs, the Wexner Center has a rich history of supporting both emerging and established artists.
González expressed her excitement about the new role, stating, “I am thrilled to join the Wexner Center because of its extraordinary history supporting emerging and established artists and presenting boundary-defying exhibitions and multidisciplinary programming. This role and its strong connections to The Ohio State University and surrounding communities present an abundance of opportunities. I’m eager to add to the conversation, curiosity, and cultural exchange that is core to the Wexner Center and Ohio State.”
González brings three decades of experience in curatorial and museum work. She has organized or co-organized over 80 exhibitions and has contributed to several books and numerous essays in publications such as Flash Art and Parkett. Recently, she was invited by Adriano Pedrosa to co-curate the 2026 exhibition “Histórias latino-americanas” at Museu de Arte de São Paulo, Brazil. She has also been serving as a curator-at-large for modern and contemporary art at the same museum.
Her previous roles include serving as Artistic Director at Instituto Inhotim in Brazil, Artistic Director and Chief Curator at Museo Jumex in Mexico City, and Senior Curator at Museo Tamayo in Mexico City. She has also held curatorial positions at the Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York, Tate Modern in London, and Museo de Bellas Artes de Caracas in Venezuela.
Gaëtane Verna, the Wexner Center’s executive director, expressed her excitement about González joining the team. Verna highlighted González’s extensive curatorial experience and her ability to create inclusive experiences. González’s values align with the Wexner Center’s commitment to excellence, service, inclusion, equity, and curiosity.
In her new role, González will collaborate with Verna and the curatorial and exhibitions team. She will work with peers in Performing Arts, Film/Video, Learning & Public Practice, Advancement, and Communications & Marketing. Her responsibilities include conceptualizing and enacting a robust exhibition calendar, engaging with audiences, managing visual arts residencies, and nurturing collaborations across the university, local communities, and the international art world.
González holds an MA in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London. She was a Helena Rubinstein Curatorial Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art and previously studied architecture at Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas and Ecole d’Architecture Paris-Villemin in Paris.
Julieta González’s appointment as Head of Exhibitions is a significant milestone for the Wexner Center for the Arts. Her wealth of experience and vision promises to bring exciting new dimensions to the center’s future exhibitions and programs.
