The Shanghai Biennale has appointed Canadian curator Kitty Scott as Chief Curator for its 15th edition, which will take place from November 8, 2025, to March 31, 2026. This prestigious art event will explore new forms of communication between art, audiences, and the environment, with Scott leading the way.
About Kitty Scott
Kitty Scott, originally from Newfoundland, Canada, brings a wealth of experience to the Shanghai Biennale. She is currently the Strategic Director at Shorefast and Fogo Island Arts and has held several prominent positions in the art world. Her previous roles include Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the National Gallery of Canada, and Chief Curator at London’s Serpentine Gallery. She also co-curated the 2018 Liverpool Biennial and managed Canada’s Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale, showcasing Geoffrey Farmer’s work.
Theme of the 15th Shanghai Biennale: “Does the flower hear the bee?”
Scott has chosen an evocative theme for the Biennale: “Does the flower hear the bee?” The title hints at the subtle, often overlooked connections within nature, particularly those that extend beyond human understanding. Reflecting on the theme, Scott explained, “We have long known that when bees gather, they communicate and share knowledge with each other. We are only just recognizing that this network of communication extends even further.”
Exploring New Sensory Connections
Scott aims to highlight how flowers respond to bees’ vibrations, producing sweeter nectar in their presence, symbolizing a form of non-verbal, sensory communication. She intends to create a similar environment at the Biennale, where artworks, visitors, and surroundings interact in profound and sensory ways.
With Scott’s expertise and unique vision, the 15th Shanghai Biennale promises to be a transformative experience, expanding how we understand and engage with art and nature.
