The Museum of Modern Art of Medellín is pleased to announce the appointment of Marielsa Castro Vizcarra as its new Chief Curator, who will take up her post in early June 2025.

Marielsa’s selection was the result of a rigorous process that began with 60 applications, from which 11 met the required profile. These applicants—residing in countries such as Colombia, Germany, the United States, Peru, and Mexico—were interviewed by the Museum. From that group, four candidates progressed to a second round of interviews with an external jury, after which two finalists were interviewed again by the Museum and its Board of Directors.

Marielsa has 15 years of experience in cultural institutions and has worked in Colombia, Mexico, and the United States. From 2021 to 2025, she was Associate Curator at Museo Jumex in Mexico City, where she curated multiple exhibitions and led both the academic public program and the community program, “Museos en común.” She organized projects and solo exhibitions by artists such as Amalia Pica, Carolina Fusilier, and Minerva Cuevas, as well as group exhibitions featuring works by Ana Mendieta, Frieda Toranzo Jaeger, Minia Biabiany, Nohemí Pérez, Vivian Caccuri, and Vivian Suter. In 2022, she also collaborated with MAMM to present the exhibition Rodrigo Hernández. El espejo.

Her practice has focused on bridging curation and pedagogy; between 2017 and 2019, she headed the public and educational services area of the Art and Other Collections Unit at Banco de la República in Bogotá, where she led exhibitions and educational projects aimed at connecting the institution with communities traditionally distant from museums. From 2012 to 2015, she directed the exhibition project LIGA | Espacio para arquitectura | DF, with the goal of fostering the exchange of ideas and research on Latin American architecture.

Born in 1984, Marielsa Castro Vizcarra is Mexican, trained as an architect at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, and holds an MDes in Art, Design, and the Public Domain from Harvard University.

With her arrival at MAMM, Marielsa will continue to strengthen the Museum’s artistic program, foster knowledge production through its collection, and forge new connections with Medellín’s art scene. In her words, “I envision a curatorial program for the museum that honors the work already done, one that includes local and regional proposals responding to the needs and interests of the public, artists, and the institution.”
