Martin Wilson Appointed CEO of Phillips
Phillips has announced the appointment of Martin Wilson as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. He succeeds Edward Dolman, who will continue as Executive Chairman until May 2025 before transitioning to a consultancy role.
Reflecting on Edward Dolman’s Legacy
Martin Wilson expressed admiration for Edward Dolman’s impactful career in the auction industry. “Edward Dolman’s extraordinary career has left an enduring legacy in the auction world,” Wilson stated. “It has been a privilege to collaborate with him over the past 16 years, and I look forward to shaping the next chapter of Phillips together.”
Under Dolman’s leadership since 2014, Phillips experienced remarkable growth. Annual sales tripled, digital and global operations expanded, and the company established a significant presence in key markets across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. He spearheaded the opening of new headquarters in major cities, including the groundbreaking WKCDA Tower in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District in 2023—a first for any Western auction house.
Dolman’s initiatives included forming the Modern & Contemporary Art department, creating a market-leading international Watch department in association with Bacs & Russo, and launching a Private Sales team. His forward-thinking approach also transformed Jewels into a prominent force in the luxury sector.
Advancing Phillips’ Digital Presence
Dolman’s ‘digital-first’ strategy redefined the company’s approach to auctions. Key innovations included the launch of a dedicated app, livestreamed auctions, and enhanced online sales capabilities. These efforts reinforced Phillips’ digital infrastructure, positioning it as a modern leader in the auction world.
Edward Dolman’s Distinguished Career
Before joining Phillips, Dolman held prominent roles at Qatar Museums, serving as Acting CEO and Director for the office of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. He previously spent 27 years at Christie’s, rising from a porter to Chief Executive Officer. Over his career, Dolman received numerous accolades, including the Légion d’Honneur, and served on advisory boards for organizations like the Courtauld Institute and Sailors for the Sea.
Martin Wilson’s Vision for Phillips
Martin Wilson brings nearly 30 years of experience in the art and auction business. A respected art lawyer, he has been integral to Phillips’ leadership since joining as Chief Legal Officer in 2018. Wilson’s tenure has been marked by his strategic acumen and commitment to fostering high-profile sales and client relationships.
“I am honored to take on this role,” Wilson said. “Phillips has achieved incredible growth under Edward’s leadership, and I am excited to build on this momentum as we continue to innovate and expand globally.”
As founder of the Art Lawyers Association and author of the legal textbook Art Law and the Business of Art, Wilson’s expertise uniquely positions him to guide Phillips through its next phase.
