#announcement #Appointment #newsModerna Museet has announced the appointment of Tone Hansen as its new Museum Director. Hansen will take up the role on 1 September 2026, following the announcement by Sweden’s Minister for Culture, Parisa Liljestrand.
Hansen joins the Stockholm institution from MUNCH in Oslo, where she has served as Director. Previously, she led the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter and has built an international reputation for museum leadership, institutional development, and strengthening the role of art organisations in public life.
In a statement, Hansen described the appointment as both a privilege and a responsibility, expressing her ambition to help shape a new direction for Moderna Museet while building a stronger, more innovative, and knowledge-driven organisation centred on art, architecture, design, and audiences.
She succeeds Gitte Ørskou, who will step down on 31 August after seven years as Museum Director. Since January 2026, Moderna Museet, ArkDes, and the Public Art Agency have operated as a single government agency under the name Moderna Museet.
Ørskou welcomed the appointment, describing Hansen as an inspiring and highly respected museum leader, and expressed confidence in her ability to guide the institution through its next chapter.
