The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks a dynamic senior curator for modern and contemporary art. This curator will be responsible for the subject areas of European art from 1900 to the present; American art from post-WWII to the present; and global contemporary art. VMFA has especially strong holdings of German Expressionism and postwar American art, and a robust collection of 21st-century art.
Responsibilities include managing all aspects of the department’s administrative work; building the collection through purchases and gifts; cultivating and stewarding patrons; organizing special exhibitions; planning gallery installations; researching and publishing the collection; monitoring the safety and care of the collection; and participating in the broader life of the museum through collaborations with educators, conservators, designers, advancement and community-outreach colleagues, among others.
Qualifications: Advanced degree in art history or a related field required; Ph.D. preferred. A specialization in modern and contemporary art, especially painting, sculpture, work on paper and multi-media, plus a minimum of five years of curatorial experience, are essential. The successful candidate will have an established publication record as well as a demonstrated ability to care for a sizable collection and develop exhibitions of national importance. This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills (written, oral, visual); significant experience with collection development, project direction, donor cultivation, and budget and personnel management; and a deep commitment to public access and audience engagement. A security background check is required.
Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
