The Brigham Young University Museum of Art is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the curatorial team, in an Adjunct Research position beginning Fall 2021, with opportunity to renew for Winter 2022. Candidates who specialize in any collection area represented in the museum’s permanent collection are encouraged to apply, ranging from religious, American, and contemporary art in a variety of media. Key responsibilities will include the researching about art/exhibitions in preparation for future exhibitions at the museum, researching and gathering pertinent information about artwork within the permanent collection in order to engage different audiences and donors with museum programming. Ideal candidates will understand a variety of periods of art history, museum operations, work well in collaborative teams, and have skilled experience in research and writing. The position is one of specialized knowledge, research, and scholarship to assist in exhibition and collection development.
Experience Required:
- Minimum two years’ experience within the professional context of scholarly research, publication and professional relationships.
- Experience conceiving and researching museum art collections both in terms of policy and of the actual collection and in developing accessibility between the collections and its audiences.
- Experience in developing and maintaining productive relationships with colleagues in other museums, collectors, donors, artists, faculty, students, administrators, board members and patrons.
- Working knowledge of museum resources, audience analysis techniques, technology for research and accessing the Museum, its exhibitions, programs and collections, and resources beyond the Museum that are important to its development.
Preferred:
- 3-5 years experience in museum context, preferably art museums
- 3-5 years experience with the professional context of scholarly research, publication, and professional relationships.
Duties/Expectations:
Minimum 20hr/week
Essential Functions
- Researching for exhibitions of the Museum’s permanent collection, as well as research and publication of art historical material and curatorial philosophy and practice
- Curatorial research leading to exhibition production and publications relevant to the Museum’s program and the Aims of a BYU Education
- Researching, analyzing, locating, acquiring, authenticating and interpreting works of art for and in the Museum’s collections
- Researches and conceives specific exhibitions with artwork outside the museum’s collection in a variety of art historical areas for presentation in the Museum’s exhibition program
- Researches, analyzes feasibility, constructs and proposes exhibitions and related programs to Head Curator.
- Researches, locates and recommends for acquisition or deaccession, works of art for, or from relevant aspects of the collection to the Head Curator
