AIR Berlin Alexanderplatz, the artist-in-residence location in Berlin, was founded in 2010 by artists Susanne Kriemann and Aleksander Komarov. Having been artists in residence themselves, Kriemann and Komarov discovered that they subsequently missed a platform that stimulates investigative research and offers support in establishing and maintaining contacts in the city. For this reason, AIR Berlin Alexanderplatz (ABA) is a residency that puts extra emphasis on the production of knowledge. They do this for their residents by way of substantive and practical support and by providing direct connections to an extensive and focused network in Berlin.
An essential part of an ABA residency are the ‘salons’, which the residents shape together with the ABA team. The salons offer a foundation for presenting artistic research at widely varying locations in Berlin. Sociological and political themes that relate to the work of the residents are discussed here with specialists from the Berlin arts and culture scene.
Earlier ABA residents include Eric Peter, Igor Sevcuk, Anna Dasovic, Phelim Hoey, Zippora Elders, Ehsan Fardjadniya and artist duos Bik van der Pol and Lonnie van Brummelen/Siebren de Haan.
For whom
Visual artists, curators and art observers can apply for a residency at AIR Berlin Alexanderplatz. For duos and collaborating partners, each person must submit a separate application.
A duo is understood to be 2 artists, curators or observers who consistently produce work together as a single unit. Collaborative partnerships producing work on a more short-term or long-term basis can be considered as duos, as long as they both submit a joint plan that leads to a single result. During the residency, duos or collaborative partners live and work together in the same space.
Application
The deadline for submitting an application for a residency in 2024 at AIR Berlin Alexanderplatz is 13 March 2023, before 17:00 PM (CET) / 12:00 PM (AST).
