The Whitney Museum offers a paid Archives Internship for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in accredited academic programs. This hybrid internship runs for 10–12 weeks in Fall 2025, requiring 16–21 hours per week (total 200 hours). Interns support archival reference services, supervise the reading room, assist researchers, digitize materials, and edit metadata using ArchivesSpace. The internship provides practical training in archival standards and museum archival workflows.
Internship Format
- Duration: 10–12 weeks (Fall 2025 semester)
- Weekly commitment: 16–21 hours (hybrid onsite/remote)
- Stipend: $3,000
- Department placement for entire internship
Key Responsibilities
- Provide in-person and remote reference support
- Supervise reading room and assist researchers onsite
- Handle reference inquiries from staff and external researchers
- Page archival collections for researcher appointments
- Digitize archival materials and prepare digital surrogates
- Edit collection metadata using ArchivesSpace
Skills and Qualifications
- Coursework in library/information science, archives, public history, or related field
- Interest in modern and contemporary American art and museums
- Familiarity with archival finding aids and ArchivesSpace preferred
- Knowledge of DACS, MS Office, spreadsheets, Adobe Photoshop a plus
- Detail-oriented and able to work independently
- Currently enrolled undergraduates (beyond freshman year) or graduate students
- Prior museum experience not required; all majors encouraged to apply
