Are you passionate about uncovering hidden histories? Join the Southbank Centre Archive and Culture& for a unique research opportunity from October to December 2024. Over 25 days (2-3 days per week), you will explore archives, uncover untold stories, and illuminate the cultural heritage of Southbank Centre.
Responsibilities
The role involves:
- Induction and training
- Hands-on archive research
- Writing and presenting findings
- Collaborating with Southbank Centre teams
This role requires at least one onsite day per week and two days during the standard working week. Remote work is possible for some tasks.

Submit a short expression of interest in writing (up to one side A4), audio (up to two minutes), or video (up to two minutes) detailing your relevant experience and project approach to info@cultureand.org by midnight on Friday, 6th September 2024. Candidates will be notified of the outcome by Friday, 20th September 2024. Interviews will be held the week commencing Monday, 30th September 2024.
Time Commitment
25 days between October 24 and December 2024 (two to three days per week), including regular supervision, training, networking, and project meetings.
- 5 days – induction, training, and research scoping
- 12 days – archive-based and online research
- 5 days – writing findings
- 3 days – presentation
Research Consultancy Fee
£5500 total, equivalent to £220 per day. As a freelancer commissioned by Culture&, the researcher will be responsible for their tax, national insurance, leave, and pension arrangements. Culture& will provide onboarding support.
Context
Southbank Centre has a rich history of diverse programming and cultural activism. It has hosted early performances by renowned artists like Paul Robeson, Nina Simone, and Jimi Hendrix. The centre has also been a venue for significant African and Caribbean arts festivals and exhibitions, such as The Other Story in 1989.
This research residency aims to uncover and document underrepresented aspects of Southbank Centre’s heritage. The goal is to provide democratic access to the archives, serving as a source of information and inspiration for all.
