About the Royal Academy of Arts

The Royal Academy of Arts is one of the nation’s treasures. It occupies a unique position in being an independent, privately-funded institution led by eminent artists and architects. We are best known for our programme of world-class exhibitions including David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture, Ai Weiwei and the recent blockbuster, Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse, as well as our annual Summer Exhibition. It is a particularly exciting time in our history. An ambitious ‘Masterplan’ by David Chipperfield RA is underway, redeveloping our 2.5-acre campus in Mayfair in time for our 250th anniversary next year. The works will unite our two buildings, providing refurbished galleries, a state-of-the-art auditorium and a dedicated Collections gallery in Burlington Gardens.

About this role

We are currently looking for an experienced Art Handler to join our team to assist with a very full exhibitions programme.   Our team of professional art handlers provides a wide range of handling, installation, packing, storage and collection care services. Often this requires out of hours working so you must have a flexible approach. You will also oversee the work of temporary and contract art handlers during busy installations and de-installations.    Our team is often required to oversee installations at other venues worldwide, ensuring correct procedures are adhered to by contractors and commercial art transport companies, so you must be prepared to travel as necessary.

About You

Ideally you will have at least 5 years’ experience of art handling for either a commercial gallery or museum. This will include the care and handling of both contemporary and historic artworks as you will work across all art media.   It’s important that you can write well in English as this role requires extensive documentation for audit purposes, health & safety and various written reports pertaining to location and tracking of artworks.   You will need to be a team player and a strong communicator.  This role requires a great deal of collaboration with staff across the Royal Academy and will work closely with all staff at all levels across the Royal Academy involved in the preparation and delivery of projects and ongoing collection care.   This is a very physical role and requires exceptional concentration skills.

The benefits we offer

  • A very generous pension, contributing up to 10% of your salary into a defined contribution scheme
  • In addition to 25 days’ holiday and 8 days’ bank holiday each year, we close between Christmas Eve and New Year, allowing staff additional paid leave
  • Staff are encouraged to attend free History of Art and life drawing classes on site
  • We also have a staff choir, running and craft clubs
  • Best of all, we have reciprocal agreements with many leading museums and art galleries in London and New York that enable you to enter for free with your staff pass.
