The Institute for Modern Art in Nuremberg is seeking a new Director (m/f/d) as of July 1, 2026, initially for a fixed term of three years

The registered, non-profit association Institut für moderne Kunst Nürnberg was founded in 1967 as an information and documentation center for contemporary art. Its core mission is to maintain an archive of German and international contemporary art.
The Institute is dedicated to documenting and preserving information and materials on art since 1945, as well as to evaluating and communicating this material through the conception and realization of exhibitions and the publication of scholarly and public-oriented publications.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Overall leadership and executive management of the Institute
- Personnel responsibility for currently eleven employees across approximately 5.5 full-time equivalent positions
- Administrative and budgetary responsibility vis-à-vis the funding bodies (Free State of Bavaria, City of Nuremberg, District of Middle Franconia) and the association’s members, including reporting obligations
- Acquisition of third-party funding and preparation of grant applications
- Strategic and conceptual development of the Institute as a documentation and information center for contemporary art with regional, national, and international visibility
- Conception, organization, and realization of exhibition and publication projects
- Public relations and active networking of the Institute for Modern Art at the regional, national, and international levels
- Representation of the Institute
Your Qualifications
- Completed university degree in art history, cultural studies, or a comparable field, or equivalent qualification
- Outstanding knowledge of national and international art (since 1945)
- Several years of relevant professional experience in an art or cultural institution comparable to the Institute for Modern Art
- Practical experience in archival work, curating exhibitions, and developing publications
- Enthusiasm, curiosity, and openness toward contemporary art and its documentation and mediation
- Good knowledge of administrative procedures (e.g., in associations or foundations), experience in fundraising and in preparing financial reports and grant documentation
- Leadership and management experience, strong teamwork and cooperation skills, and recognition of the expertise of colleagues
- Strong communication skills and public presence within the urban and cultural community
- Organizational and problem-solving skills, networked and conceptual thinking, innovative spirit, and a structured, goal-oriented working style
