Overview
The City of West Hollywood’s Art on the Outside (AOTO) program supports the temporary display of rotating art exhibitions. These exhibitions take place in publicly accessible locations such as parks, traffic medians, and communal areas of City-owned facilities. The art displayed includes sculptures, murals, digital artwork, projections, and performance art. Most exhibitions last between 6 months and 3 years, depending on the artwork’s concept, construction, and location.
Eligibility
The program welcomes proposals from individual artists, curators, and non-profit arts organizations based in the United States. It aims to showcase work from emerging, mid-career, and established artists.
Budget
Proposals must include a detailed budget covering various costs from artist fees to transportation and maintenance. The City typically funds projects up to $8,000. Proposals requiring more funding must show potential sources for additional finances.
Proposal Requirements
Concept
The Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission values proposals that push boundaries and show creativity compared to current art trends.
Materials
Artworks should withstand outdoor conditions and be installation-ready. Considering solar power for artworks needing electricity is advisable.
Location
Proposals should specify a pre-approved location. New locations must be discussed with the staff before submission.
Insurance
Selected proposals will need to meet the City of West Hollywood’s insurance requirements, including general liability and auto insurance.
Selection Process
The Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and its Art on the Outside Subcommittee review proposals. They assess each based on criteria like artist qualifications, aesthetics, diversity, budget, and public safety. Successful proposals are forwarded to the Commission for final approval.
