The Burlington Contemporary Art Writing Prize seeks to discover and support emerging voices in contemporary art criticism. Open to aspiring writers worldwide, the prize promotes accessible yet sophisticated art writing. Submissions must be unpublished reviews (800–1,000 words) of a contemporary art exhibition that has taken place since 2000 and closed within the past six months.
The 2025 prize will be judged by art historian Dawn Ades and artist-writer Hito Steyerl, both prominent figures in the study and practice of contemporary art.
Submission Guidelines
- Submit one unpublished review (800–1,000 words) in English
- Reviews must focus on a contemporary art exhibition (art made since 2000)
- The reviewed exhibition must be recent (closed within six months of submission)
- Include up to three low-resolution images
- Writers must not have published more than six articles in professional outlets
- Writers previously published in The Burlington Magazine or Burlington Contemporary are not eligible
- Poems, visual essays, and reviews of the applicant’s own work are not accepted
