To strengthen their team, TAXISPALAIS – Kunsthalle Tirol is seeking an Artistic Director (m/f/d) for a full-time position (40 hours per week), for the period January 1, 2027 to December 31, 2032.
About TAXISPALAIS – Kunsthalle Tirol
The TAXISPALAIS – Kunsthalle Tirol was founded in 1964 as the gallery of the Province of Tyrol and is one of the most renowned venues for contemporary art in Austria. It presents international and Austrian contemporary art and pursues two central objectives: bringing significant international positions to Tyrol and strengthening Tyrolean artists on a national and international level.
The focus of TAXISPALAIS – Kunsthalle Tirol is the presentation of the broadest possible range of media and content in contemporary art, ensuring a balanced relationship between current international art and contemporary art from Tyrol. With regard to the sustainability of the program, the production of catalogs is encouraged, and the institution’s digital presence should be continuously optimized.
Currently, TAXISPALAIS is operated as a subsidiary of the Tyrolean State Museums Operating Company (TLM). As of January 1, 2027, it will be administratively integrated into TLM while retaining its artistic independence.
As Artistic Director, you will further develop the profile of TAXISPALAIS – Kunsthalle Tirol through an innovative exhibition and mediation program, in line with budgetary conditions, and strengthen its supraregional importance as the leading platform for contemporary art from and in Tyrol.
Your Responsibilities
- Conceptualization and realization of three to four exhibitions per year of international contemporary art, in compliance with approved timelines and budgets. The program should include both international positions and outstanding artists from Tyrol, complemented by publications as well as educational and event formats.
- Expansion of networks and collaborations with cultural institutions in Austria and abroad
- Increasing the visibility and societal relevance of contemporary art in and from Tyrol by addressing current topics, presenting renowned artists, and strengthening interdisciplinary approaches
- Maintaining relationships with the art scene, sponsors, partners, and the association “Friends of TAXISPALAIS” as a platform for contemporary artistic production and support
- Development and implementation of target-group-specific educational formats, especially for young people, with the aim of sustainably expanding audiences
- Increasing cultural participation through specific offerings and collaborations for tourist target groups as well as students in Innsbruck
Requirements
- Completed degree in art history, fine arts, curatorial studies, or a comparable qualification
- Relevant professional experience and proven success as artistic director of a comparable art institution, or several years of experience in designing and implementing exhibitions of a similar scale, as well as developing innovative concepts for education and audience development
- Excellent knowledge of Austrian and international contemporary art and art theory, as well as a strong network within the regional, national, and international art world
- Management and leadership skills (experience in leadership, team and project management, responsibility for resources and budgets, organizational competence)
- Experience in dealing with sponsors, the public, and the media
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, team orientation, and problem-solving ability
- Business-fluent German and English skills
- Category B driver’s license for use of the TLM vehicle fleet
- Clean criminal record
- Primary residence in Tyrol or willingness to relocate there in the near future
