The Rijksakademie is seeking an inspiring and dynamic Artistic Leader to create and facilitate an environment where artists are given maximum space to experiment, develop, and explore new artistic directions. This key role will shape the artistic direction of the Rijksakademie’s internationally renowned two-year residency programme, which supports approximately fifty artists from around the world. As Artistic Leader, you will foster dialogue, experimentation, and collaboration within a diverse, interdisciplinary community while strengthening ties with alumni and cultivating a robust international network.
Key Responsibilities
- Vision & Leadership:
- Develop and safeguard the artistic direction of the Rijksakademie, ensuring artists’ autonomy while providing space for experimentation.
- Create an inspiring environment that promotes critical dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Community Engagement:
- Maintain and expand a strong international network of artists, curators, and institutions.
- Act as a connecting force, supporting the selection process of new residents and maintaining ongoing alumni relations.
- Programme Development:
- Oversee the creative process within the residency programme, working closely with artistic advisors and technical specialists.
- Contribute to the strategic development of the institution, ensuring the Rijksakademie continues to lead in the Dutch and international art field.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with the General Director and the team to achieve both artistic and organisational objectives.
- Facilitate innovative programming that responds to contemporary artistic and societal challenges.
Candidate Profile
- Deep knowledge of contemporary art with a broad understanding of diverse artistic practices and discourses.
- A well-established, diverse international network within the art world.
- Extensive experience in artistic leadership within art institutions, residencies, or post-academic programmes.
- Proven track record in supporting and guiding artists’ development, with strong management and project coordination skills.
- Ability to articulate a clear, inclusive vision and foster an environment of trust, freedom, and experimentation.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a global perspective on art.
