The Joslyn Art Museum seeks an Assistant or Associate Curator specializing in European art from 1200–1900. The endowed curatorial position offers the opportunity to develop dynamic programs across collections, exhibitions, research, and public engagement, joining the museum during a pivotal period of expansion, renovation, and strategic planning.
Employment Details
- Position: Assistant/Associate Curator (full-time, exempt)
- Department: Curatorial
- Reporting to: Chief Curator & Director of Collections
- Salary: $55,000–70,000 (based on experience)
Responsibilities
- Direct the care, development, and installation of the museum’s European art collection.
- Conduct original research, publish scholarship, and develop exhibitions.
- Coordinate loan exhibitions and collaborate with Learning & Engagement staff.
- Support donor cultivation and stewardship; develop events and public programs.
- Ensure positive visitor experience and adherence to museum policies.
Candidate Profile
- PhD in Art History or ABD with broad expertise in historical European art; specialization in an area represented in the collection.
- 3–5 years curatorial experience in an art museum.
- Proven record of research, publications, and exhibition planning.
- Knowledge of collections management best practices.
- Strong oral and written communication, public speaking skills, and proficiency in relevant European languages.
- Established network with curators, scholars, collectors, and dealers.
- Familiarity with the auction and sales market for European art.
- Ability to collaborate across museum departments and engage donors and the public.
Physical & Other Requirements
- Ability to navigate galleries, storage, and off-site locations.
- Capacity for prolonged sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and handling artworks.
- Availability to work long hours during installations or special events.
