About the Role
Assistant Collection Managers in the Loans & Display team manage practical aspects of care and preservation of the British Museum collections. The focus includes mount making, loan packing, and exhibition installation. Responsibilities include storage, movement, and preparation of objects for loans and display, across all Museum sites. They also manage packing, handling, and display of objects lent to venues in the UK and internationally. This role is primarily technical, requiring problem-solving skills and a flexible working approach.
Note: There are 2 roles available for this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor security and maintain objects in good condition in storage, transit, and display.
- Observe best practices in object handling and collections storage.
- Facilitate movement, packing, and display of objects across collections.
- Maintain and update essential object documentation, including location information.
- Construct mounts and install objects in the Museum and at other venues.
- Assist the Framed Works/Heavy Object or Textile teams as required.
- Act as courier on UK and international loans and perform any Known Consigner training and duties as required.
About You
- Education: Good general education including GCSEs or equivalent.
- Interest: Demonstrable interest in aspects of the Museum’s collections.
- Skills: Manual dexterity, IT skills, and an understanding of materials and objects.
- Teamwork: Ability to work well as part of a team, self-motivated, and able to use initiative. Good communicator.
- Experience: Practical experience with hand tools and workshop equipment, familiarity with databases, slinging and heavy lifting training, framing experience (desirable).
- Work Experience: Museum or gallery work, object or art handling, and installation experience (desirable).
