Purpose of Position

Why does the job exist?
The Assistant Curator will provide operational support to the Head of Curatorial Affairs and the curatorial team. The addition of the Vladem contemporary will bring more exhibition and collections space as well as more outreach to the community – this position will be a central point of contact for all and will provide some of the support needed to handle these increased demands. A primary purpose is to insure good exchange of information in a timely fashion both internally and externally about the exhibitions and collections at the Museum of Art. The position will track and coordinate the distribution of exhibition schedules. The Assistant Curator will contribute to researching and developing exhibitions. This position is needed to ensure timely response to internal and external requests for information. They will act as a clearing house for materials drafted for website and press.
How does it get done?
Work as part of the curatorial team to realize the production of exhibitions and public programs. Research, curate and develop exhibitions as part of a team and individually. Participate in departmental exhibition and acquisition meetings. Engage with the public and respond to external requests for information and collaboration. Organize exhibition images and other exhibition and program documentation including the Museum of Art Friends Group. Contribute to organizational development of the Museum of Art.

Ideal Candidate has:
* A Degree in art history, museum studies or related field, masters preferred
* Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
* Experience with Photoshop and database software preferred
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Museology, Art, Art History, Art Administration, Anthropology, American Studies, Archaeology, Curatorial Studies, History, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Liberal Arts, Public History, or Paleontology and two (2) years of experience in exhibit development, collections management, curation, creative writing, conducting research in specialty area of a museum, and working with historical concepts.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver¿s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Executive Order 2021-066 requires all employees with the State of New Mexico to provide either proof of COVID-19 vaccination (including proof of a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster dose) or proof of a COVID-19 viral test every week.
The Public Health Order (on Vaccination) dated December 2, 2021, requires Congregate Care Facility Workers and Hospital Workers to have received a primary series of vaccination by October 6, 2021, and a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state of NM driver’s license and must attend state vehicle safety certification program in order to drive museum’s vehicles. Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive computer and phone usage. Position continuously works with LCD projectors, Microsoft Office Suite and Photoshop (or equivalent software). Weekend and evening work may be required.
