The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. With around 2 million visitors each year prior to temporary closure for the Inspiring People project and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country’s most important and popular galleries.
Assistant Curator
£15,852 per annum, (Based on the full time equivalent of £26,420 per annum)
Part time, 24 hours (3 days) per week
Fixed Term Contract until 9 December 2022.
This is an exciting time to be joining the National Portrait Gallery as an Assistant Curator. The post holder will provide administrative and curatorial support on a number of forthcoming major exhibitions. You will support the delivery of the Inspiring People project, working across the Victorian to Contemporary periods.
To be considered for this post, you will need a degree in Art History or History and experience working or volunteering in a Museum or Gallery setting. You will also need to show an interest in British Art History, history and portraiture. This is a fast paced role and so the successful postholder will need to have excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise their work, including responding quickly to requests for information. You will need to be confident, professional and measured in your approach to work and have the ability to work flexibly and meticulously under pressure.
It is fundamental that the postholder has excellent interpersonal skills and telephone manner with the ability to read situations quickly whilst identifying suitable approaches. They will need to be able to convey key information clearly, accurately and succinctly. This role will require you to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues within the Curatorial department and across the Gallery.
Given that the postholder will be providing administrative support to a team of Curators, you will need to have excellent administrative and writing skills with experience of researching, drafting minutes and correspondence. You will need to have strong IT skills and a high level of competence in using Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook.
Please note that we are currently working remotely from home due to the impact of Covid-19 but normally most of the work is based in the Gallery at St Martin’s Place.
