Kunstverein Hannover, founded in 1832, is one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious art associations for contemporary art based in Hannover, supported by some 1,400 members, housed in the city’s historic Künstlerhaus, which includes exhibition rooms of 7500 square feet in total. Bi-annually the institution awards three emerging artists the Preis des Kunstvereins Hannover, granting stipends and residencies as well as a joint exhibition at the Kunstverein. Past exhibitions include, among many others, monographic shows by Miriam Cahn (1988), Alfredo Jaar (1996), Kara Walker (2002), Julie Mehretu (2007), Omer Fast (2008), Hiwa K (2018), and Kaari Upson (2019).
Field of Responsibilities
As Assistant Curator you will contribute actively and creatively to the conception and realization of Kunstverein Hannover’s exhibitions and program.
• Contribution to conception and realization of exhibitions and programs, including related management and editorial tasks
• Research relevant artistic, historical, and social contexts for upcoming projects, especially in the city of Hannover, in Lower Saxony, in Germany, and beyond
• Research relevant art-historical contexts, on own initiative and at the request of the director
• Coordination, management, and follow-up tasks related to art projects including communication with artists and other partners
• Communication with local art scene and mediation of conceptual content, collaboration with local, national, and international art institutions and initiatives
• Maintain familiarity with current international publications, festivals, biennials, symposia and other events within the field of visual arts which are relevant for the artistic programs of the Kunstverein
• Jury duties
• Close collaboration with the education team in project specific and larger projects
• Co-develop new formats in the institutional arts field, new communication and programming strategies for exploring social contexts and developing new audiences
• Contribute to fundraising efforts and respective submissions/applications
• Authoring and editing of texts for internal and external communication of projects
Profile
• University degree or equally relevant education and/or experience in the field
• Proven relevant experience in Visual Arts, Performance, and Discourse
• Knowledge of the international cultural field, especially in Visual Arts
• Experience in curatorial work and spatial practice
• Strategic thinking and knowledge of interrelations of culture politics and social contexts
• Strong communication skills, team player, grace under pressure
• Excellent time management skills, ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously
• Excellent German and English, additional language(s) a plus
• Proven responsibility in managing budgets for art projects
The position is full-time, and Hanover-based.
