TBA21 is currently looking for a full-time Assistant Curator, based in Madrid to support us in the running of our day-to-day activities and to assist us in the realization of exhibitions and projects, supporting continuously the Curator at TBA21–Academy.
We are looking for a highly motivated team player with an interest in contemporary art who pays great attention to details, enjoys the planning and realization of projects, being responsible for the successful execution, monitoring, and closure of projects. Portfolio of projects will vary depending on the current priorities and needs.
In collaboration with TBA21 and TBA21–Academy teams, partner institutions, and external partners, the Assistant Curator helps to coordinate the smooth delivery of TBA21–Academy’s projects ensuring that clear schedules are disseminated and adhered by all parties.
Main Responsibilities:
- Provide support to the Curator at TBA21–Academy, from the research and development stage of a project through to its realization: exhibitions, commissions, performances, public programs, and any other formats.
- Carrying out research of primary and secondary sources in global history, art history, contemporary politics and policy as appropriate.
- Gathering, analyzing, and summarizing bibliographic research, scholarly texts, visual information, and any other materials related to the assigned projects to contextualize them.
- Identifying artists, scholars, writers, and theorists as well as NGOs, foundations and sponsors to collaborate with the program.
- Liaise with artists and their representatives, arts institutions, and partners. Help with the writing, editing, and translation of all the materials associated with assigned projects.
- Supervise the editing process of printed matters, incl. program booklets and other publications.
- Keep an organized track of all the projects, filing of documents, accurate records of interviews and research findings, and maintaining data in order.
- For all Public Programs, plan and manage the activities, attending to them and supporting in any need attendees may have.
- Support and accompany the production of new artwork commissions from concept to delivery.
- Liaise with all TBA21 departments including Communications, Publications, and Shared Services to secure a smooth flow of information.
- Participate in project meetings, staff meetings, and others as appropriate, and take minutes.
- Budget administration and reporting: maintain meticulous budget records and work with the Finance Department as required to ensure that projects are delivered on budget.
- Throughout the development of a project, be mindful of their research potential and possible net of collaborations, advising on how they could be made effective.
- Encourage sustainability wherever possible, recycling and re-use of materials, implementing UN SDGs in our practices.
Profile Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of executive experience as part of a curatorial team, with a focus on production, digital office, project management, and executive assistance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with professional proficiency in English and Spanish.
- A relevant degree or post-graduate degree in history of art, curatorial practice, philosophy, political science, or a related field.
- Substantial and relevant work experience in an art gallery, museum, or in the context of a private or public collection.
- Extensive experience of the processes involved in staging public, study and performance programs.
- Experience developing project plans and supporting organizations in implementing them.
- Experience of developing and project managing publications, related print and interpretative material.
- Flexible approach to work including demonstrable ability to work under pressure and to deadline
- Excellent time management and proven ability to work on a number of projects at the same time with meticulous attention to detail.
- Awareness of issues of social, ecological, and cultural diversity as they affect the work of a contemporary art institution.
- Committed to learning and willing to ask questions, a problem-solver able to find and resolve issues.
- Ability to refine and improve processes in collaboration with colleagues and external providers.
