Position Description
The Bass, Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, seeks a full-time Assistant Curator. The Assistant Curator is an essential member of the Collections and Exhibitions team supporting the organization and presentation of exhibitions of contemporary art, the permanent collection, artist commissions, and public works projects. Key responsibilities include assisting with all facets related to exhibitions and collections, engaging with a range of constituents at the Museum and beyond while multitasking responsibilities and commitments.
Responsibilities:
- Work under the supervision of the Curator to assist with all aspects of organizing exhibitions of contemporary art, commissioned projects, rotations of the permanent collection, installations of public sculpture, and associated programming.
- Conduct research on artists participating in exhibitions, works of art in the museum’s collection, and artwork under consideration for acquisition.
- Write interpretive materials related to exhibitions and collections, including wall labels, introductory panels, essays for print and online publication.
- Communicate with lenders—gallerists, collectors, artists, foundations—to exhibitions regarding loans, fabrication, research, and transportation.
- Collaborate with museum’s registrar and exhibitions team on the installation of works of art and large-scale commissioned projects.
- Work with museum’s preparator team to install and design exhibitions.
- Contribute to identifying solutions, sourcing materials, and installing works of art and commissioned projects.
- Contribute to the condition checking of works of art.
- Contribute to the budgeting efforts related to the collections and exhibitions.
- Conduct administrative responsibilities as assigned and participate in the day-to-day activities of Collections and Exhibitions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience and Skills:
- At least three years of experience working in the field of contemporary art at museums or comparable contemporary arts organizations.
- Ability to function in and contribute to high performance work environment.
- Excellent organizational skills with proven abilities to project management, including a capacity to multi-task on short- and long-term projects.
- Demonstrated experience working with new media, video, film, or digital technologies.
- Proven record of exhibition research.
- Proven record of communication skills in writing and public speaking, plus the ability to communicate efficiently by email and phone.
- Ability to work creatively and collaboratively with variety of interlocutors inside and outside the museum.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
- Knowledge and experience with museum database, Embark or comparable.
- Knowledge of MS Word, including Outlook; plus presentation software Keynote (or PowerPoint); Adobe Creative; and Sketchup required.
Knowledge and education:
- MA in art history or curatorial studies, or equivalency.
